The Reserv vs Hinge: which one fits how you want to date?
Short answer: Hinge is a profile-first app — you browse people, match, and plan the date in chat. The Reserv is plan-first — you browse real dinner plans in Austin and request a seat. They solve different problems, and plenty of people will reasonably use both.
How each one works
Hinge
You browse profiles built from photos and prompts and like or comment on a specific photo or prompt. A match forms when the other person responds to your like, and then you chat. Hinge's Date Ideas feature lets people show preferred first-date activities and a time window, but Hinge says it doesn't schedule the date — matches plan it together in chat.
The Reserv
A host picks a restaurant from the app's Austin list, books the table on OpenTable, and publishes the plan once the app has verified the booking. Guests browse open plans — restaurant, night, time, open seat — and request one. The host accepts the guest they want, and chat opens after that. How the booking and verification work.

When Hinge is the better fit
- You're not in Austin, or you're on Android.
- You want a big pool to browse and like to get a feel for someone in chat before deciding on a first date.
- You want the first date to be something other than dinner — a walk, coffee, trivia.
- You value an optional photo-verification badge on the people you see.
When The Reserv is the better fit
- You're in Austin and the part you hate is the scheduling, not the meeting.
- You would rather say yes to a specific night at a specific restaurant than to a profile.
- You already know where you want to eat and would rather host the table and choose who joins.
- You want the bill question settled up front: every plan shows the host's payment preference before anyone requests the seat.
The Reserv's honest limits
The Reserv is new, Austin-only, and on the App Store for iPhone only — not Android. Hosts can only pick restaurants the app supports, which means OpenTable venues on its Austin list — not every restaurant in town. On a quiet night there may be few open plans. It verifies reservations, not people, and a verified booking does not guarantee that anyone shows up. Read safety and trust for exactly what is and isn't in place.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the main difference between The Reserv and Hinge?
- Hinge is profile-first: you browse people, match, and arrange the date in chat. The Reserv is plan-first: you browse real dinner plans in Austin — restaurant, night, time, open seat — and request a seat, and chat opens after the host accepts.
- Is The Reserv cheaper than Hinge?
- The Reserv is free, with no subscriptions or in-app purchases; you pay the restaurant for your own dinner as the plan describes. Hinge has a free tier plus paid Hinge+ and HingeX subscriptions, Roses, and Boosts, with prices that vary by region and plan length.
- Can I use The Reserv and Hinge at the same time?
- Yes. They do different jobs. Some people use a profile-first app to meet people and The Reserv when they want a specific dinner on a specific night in Austin.
- Which is safer, The Reserv or Hinge?
- Neither can guarantee safety. Hinge offers optional Selfie Verification and age or ID checks in some places, and says it does not run background checks on all users. The Reserv verifies the host’s restaurant booking, not identity, and does not run background checks. Dates on The Reserv happen at public restaurants. Standard first-date precautions apply on both.
